All star fans are ready to get in their feels as they tune in and watch the Contemporary/Lyrical divisions grace the stage at The Dance Worlds 2023.

In 2017, The Dance Worlds made the decision to introduce the Contemporary/Lyrical category to the championship as a way to separate the more emotionally-driven choreography from the fast-paced and sassy Jazz routines. Dance Dynamics made history that year claiming the first-ever Contemporary/Lyrical title at The Dance Worlds.

In 2019, the popular division was split by size to create Senior Small and Senior Large Contemporary/Lyrical divisions.

As the Contemporary/Lyrical movement became more popular, the decision was necessary to allow this style to grow in the all star dance community. This has allowed clarity for choreographers and dancers alike to be able to embrace the scoresheet and impress the world-renowned judges.

If you have ever been moved to feel extreme emotional highs or lows simply by watching a dance routine, chances are you were watching a routine in this category. The Contemporary/Lyrical divisions are known for having the most emotion-driven concepts, choreography, and performances.

The USASF describes a Contemporary/Lyrical routine as using “organic, expressive, pedestrian and/or traditional modern and/or ballet vocabulary as it complements the lyrics, mood and/or rhythmic value of the music. So, what this style ultimately comes down to is choreography intertwined with musicality.

Whenever we watch these divisions, the best of the best always tug at our heartstrings. So, make sure you grab your tissues, sit back, and get ready for a beautiful show.

The Dance Worlds will feature three different divisions in the Contemporary/Lyrical category: Senior Small, Senior Large, Open Open.
