The Story of Magic Athletics:

Magic Athletics is a small, family-focused cheerleading gym proudly rooted in South Jersey. This year, Magic celebrates an incredible milestone—30 seasons of developing strong athletes both on and off the mat.

For three decades, Magic Athletics has remained committed to creating an environment where athletes come first. While building skills, confidence, and strong competitors is an important part of the program, Magic believes that an athlete’s growth goes far beyond what happens on the mat.

At the heart of Magic is family. The gym is dedicated to creating a supportive community where athletes feel valued, encouraged, and connected. Through teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, community involvement, and lasting friendships, Magic strives to help athletes grow into confident and compassionate young people.

Meet The Owners:

The  owners of Magic Athletics are Karen Cardillo and Lauren Shaughnessy.

Karen Cardillo has been part of the competitive cheerleading world since its earliest days, helping to grow with the sport as it evolved into what it is today. Among the many athletes Karen coached throughout the years was Lauren Shaughnessy—one of her former athletes who would eventually join her in leading the next chapter of Magic Athletics.

Today, Karen and Lauren bring together decades of experience, tradition, and a shared passion for putting athletes first. Their relationship represents so much of what Magic Athletics stands for: mentorship, loyalty, family, and passing the love of the sport from one generation to the next.

As Magic celebrates its 30th season, Karen and Lauren continue to honor the program’s history while building its future—together, they’re Making Magic.

Special Wins & Accomplishments:

Magic Athletics continues to build a strong tradition of competitive success, with teams earning their way to D2 Summit Finals year after year. That success begins with the program’s youngest athletes, who are developing their skills, confidence, and love for the sport while competing—and winning—at CDE competitions. From the youngest teams to the Summit stage, Magic continues to build strong, successful athletes at every level.

What Makes The Program Special:

Magic believes that being a strong athlete extends far beyond the mat. Just as our athletes give their all to their teams, they are encouraged to give back to the community around them. Family, kindness, and community service are at the heart of the Magic philosophy.

Magic is especially proud to continue participating in the CHOP Parkway Run & Walk. What began as a team bonding experience has grown into a meaningful Magic-wide community event, bringing athletes, coaches, and families together to support pediatric cancer research and show that the strength of the Magic family reaches far beyond the gym.

What Are You The Most Proud Of About Your Program?

What I am most proud of after 30 years of Magic isn’t the medals, banners, or titles—it’s the kind-hearted, hardworking athletes this program has helped shape. Medals come and go, but the impact made on a child can last a lifetime. Karen and Lauren have created something far greater than successful cheerleaders. They have built a program that teaches athletes to work hard, support one another, give back, and understand what it means to be part of a family. That is the true legacy of Magic Athletics—and something worth celebrating after 30 incredible years.

What Is Your Biggest Goal This Season?

The biggest goal for this season is to see our athletes continue to grow, challenge themselves, and support one another every step of the way. We want them to enjoy the journey, strengthen their friendships, and be proud of everything they accomplish together.

And, of course, we can’t forget just how hard these athletes work. They put countless hours, dedication, and heart into this sport. We hope all that hard work pays off in a big way this season—with incredible performances, unforgettable memories, and hopefully a few first-place titles along the way!
