Inside the World of Varsity Spirit Fashion
Having a uniform that stands out is very important in the cheerleading world. A team wants to be unique, emphasize their branding and have a uniform that compliments their athletes. The uniform designing process is detailed and can take weeks to months to finalize. Varsity Spirit Fashion has been producing quality uniforms since 1974 and Varsity Sales Rep, Angee Wilcox, gave us some insight into the world of Varsity Fashion.

Tell us about your job...what does it entail, what are your responsibilities?
I am a Sales Rep for Varsity Spirit Fashion!  I get to work with amazing coaches and athletes to create the perfect look to represent their schools and gyms.  I am a year round resource and support system for them in all things cheer & dance.

Tell us about the design process.
There are several steps.  We start out with a personal design session with our talented design team where we watch the creation of the uniform come to life! Then a prototype is manufactured and approved. After that process is completed the athletes are personally fitted and the order is placed.  It is so moving to watch the teams you work with walk out on the competition floor for the first time in a one of a kind Varsity creation. It takes my breath away every time!

What makes a uniform look good?
The athlete's confidence when wearing it!  You can walk through any camp or competition and see vastly different designs.  What is important is the team's vision. When they are in a uniform they designed, that represents their image,  it creates the perfect look.

What are the fashion differences you see in School cheer vs All-star vs College cheer?

These are totally different markets. School and College are all about tradition and beautiful, clean, sharp lines.  With All-Star, the designs are unique, one of a kind representations of each gym!  It is so fun to see both come to life!

What is your favorite current uniform trend right now?

The endless designs that can be made using specialty fabrics with sublimation.

What is the best part of your job?
Hands down the people I work with! My co-workers and customers are unbelievable!

Tell us something that would surprise us about the uniform business.

The number of people who come together to create each Varsity uniform. There are professionals at every step to see the uniform process to completion. There are reps, designers, seamstresses, technicians, etc. who all work together to make sure each uniform is beautifully designed, produced with the highest quality materials, and shipped to the customer in a timely manner.  A lot of love goes into every single one of our uniforms!
Worst uniform fashion trend from the past?
Culotte skirts!  Yes, they were real.

How long have you been working for Varsity?  Where is your territory?
12 amazing years and counting! My territory is a portion of Houston and surrounding areas.

Does Varsity hold yearly training & tell us about that?
Yes! We have an amazing National Sales Conference every year where we are trained on the latest trends and technology.  I am so proud of the investment Varsity makes in its sales team.  We are treated with value and are well supported.

Three tips for coaches when designing new uniforms for their next season?
  1. Have a vision.
  2. Know what you like (and do not like).
  3. Be decisive.
  4. Be true to yourself - YesI know, that was four!
