Olympics To Be Held In Cheerleading's Backyard
In a report by the International Olympic Committee on July 31, 2017, Los Angeles declared their official candidature to host the 2028 Olympic Games!
The news broke Monday that the 2028 Olympic Games will be headed to Los Angeles. Everybody is buzzing about the news, and the cheer world is no exception given the positive steps taken between the sport and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The International Olympic Committee will contribute $1.8 billion in advance to the Los Angeles Organizing Committee to help give the city a longer planning period to increase participation and access to youth sports programs in the years leading up the Summer Games.
Did you know that in hosting the 2028 Olympic Games, Los Angeles will be the second city to host the modern Olympic Games THREE times?
London became the first trifecta city after hosting the Summer Games in 2012. The City of Angels held the Games previously in 1932 and 1984. With LA capturing the 2028 Olympic Games, Paris can now the save the date for 2024.
After being granted provisional Olympic status late last year, cheerleading may soon know where it could be making its Games debut if it is given full recognition as an Olympic sport. With the U.S. dominating the podium in recent years at the ICU World Championships, American cheerleaders are overjoyed to see the Games coming back to U.S. soil.
