Get Jazzed Up For The Dance Worlds 2018

Get ready for the Jazz division to bring you power, sass, and all the energy this year at The Dance Worlds.

In the past, many teams brought their contemporary/lyrical style routines to the Jazz category. But last year, The Dance Worlds introduced the separate Contemporary/Lyrical category to the championship, leaving the Jazz division open for more powerful and energetic routines.

Jazz brings specific technique, more power moves, and accents the most obvious musical cues of a song. Now that this is the second year of Jazz and Contemporary/Lyrical being separated, we should expect even more differentiation between the categories as teams hit the stage.

These are the four different divisions you’ll see in the Jazz category: Senior Small, Senior Large, Open, and Open Coed Jazz.

Let's start with the Senior Small division.

The only two teams who have taken home the gold medal in the Small Senior Jazz division, which was previously not separated by group size, are Dancer’s Edge Studio from Macomb, Michigan, and PACE Elite All Stars from Westminster, California. PACE, unfortunately, will not be attending Worlds this year, so that leaves only one returning champion competing for the title.

Dancer’s Edge Studio has consistently brought flawless technique to their performances. They’ve proved their difficulty with their execution speed and the details of they add to their choreography are countless. You may have to watch last year’s routine twice to catch them all. They show a professional vibe when they take the stage and are a team to beat.

Dancer’s Edge is bound to put up a strong fight but with how hard these Jazz teams have been working this year, who knows? There might be a first-time champion crowned.

A few on-the-rise teams to look out for are Champion Legacy and Dance Mania. They have some great, entertaining routines this year that could wow the judges and earn them the top spot.

Open divisions bring the most international teams, so it’s very exciting to compete against teams from literally around the world. For 2018, the Open Jazz division brings a team that has taken home the gold for the past three years, the Vision Dance Center out of Louisville, Kentucky.

Vision has had a strong season so far taking home the Open Jazz title at the UDA National Dance Team Championship with a breathtaking "Heaven"-themed routine. The studio is strong with musicality and staging. No matter where you look on the stage, there is something interesting and engaging happening.
