Big Bows & Afros: The Black Girl's Guide To Cheer Hair

The cheerleading world has seen so many different hairstyles over the years, from ringlet ponytails to the infamous poofs and even the half up half down look that guaranteed to leave you with a few missing hairs at the end of your routine!

As a black girl growing up without social media like we have today, my knowledge of various ways to protect my hair was very limited. I asked some members of Black Girls Cheer for some tips they wish they knew growing up or that they use now!

Tip #1: Save your money in the long run, splurge on the ponytail now!

This will not only help cut your styling time in half, but it will help prevent breakage from the constant styling every competition weekend.

Tip #2: Do NOT use hairspray or gel.

The ingredients in most hairsprays and gels WILL dry out your hair. Instead, use an all natural/alcohol-free gel or edge control and a toothbrush to slick down those baby hairs!

Tip #3: Save the stress by using protective hairstyles!

The most common protective hairstyles for Black girls are braids and locs. However, if you still want the high pony, you can always braid your hair into a bun and then add the pony in - this will also give your hair volume without teasing it!

Tip #4: Speaking of teasing...

NEVER, EVER, EVER tease your hair! But if you have a fake pony tease that all you want!

Another great no-hassle protective style is a full sew in like BGC Ambassador, Angel Rice!

Tip #5: A little water goes a long way!

If you wear your hair natural, always make sure to do wash and go before the event. Also, pack a good leave-in conditioner (this one is my personal favorite) & keep refreshing with water or a curl refresher throughout the day!
