Top Gun's Tips For Surviving Summer Heat

For most people, summer in Miami is the place to vacation as people travel just to enjoy the sunny city and great tanning weather. However, those who are athletes in Miami know that it’s one of the most difficult times of the year to train in.

Everyone who has been at Top Gun knows that the moment you walk into the gym, you will most likely start sweating. Thankfully, there have been huge fans installed that have helped create more of a breeze in the gym.

However, even when the heat seems unbearable at times, I always loved the workout I got as an athlete and now that I coach, I know my athletes are going to be getting in a great workout as well.

Here’s my best advice for those of you coming to get in a workout at a gym in Florida or any gym during the hot summer months.

1. Bring a towel to every practice.

With how sweaty you get during practice, it’s imperative to have a towel with you to wipe off your sweat so you’re not slipping when trying to stunt.

2. 15-30 minute water breaks during practice are a must to keep from dehydrating.

Giving frequent water breaks allows for the athletes to stay hydrated. Athletes should stay away from sugary sodas, energy drinks during practice and stick to water or sports drink: Gatorade, PowerAde, etc.

3. Be sure to hydrate properly before practice.

It is equally as important to hydrate prior to your practice, as it is to stay hydrated during your practice. Staying hydrated is not only important to your overall, good health, but it also regulates your body temperature and lubricates your joints while exercising. If you're not hydrated, your body can't perform at its highest level.

4. Stay away from leggings and thick clothing: tank tops are your friend.

With it already feeling like a sauna inside of the gym, the last thing you want to do is wear heavy clothing that is going to make you feel even hotter. Stick to light workout clothing like shorts, tank tops or dry fit materials.

5. Use chalk or liquid chalk, which some of our athletes use because it is less of a mess.

Chalk helps keep your hands dry when you’re sweating and feel like you keep slipping.

Summer may be ending but the warm weather is still here. Stay safe and happy practicing!
