STUNT Becomes One Of Four New NCAA Championship Sports: Here's What To Know

STUNT has become one of the newest recognized NCAA Championship sports announced on Jan. 16 after the NCAA Convention in Washington D.C.

On Jan. 16, the NCAA announced four new Championship sports will be added with inaugural championships taken place as early as Spring 2027. 

STUNT becomes one of the four newly added championships as decided at the NCAA Convention in Washington D.C. 

While STUNT has been popping up all over the country, with 40 schools adopting the sport in its first year as an emerging sport, across all three divisions of the NCAA, the addition of a STUNT championship will only continue to grow the sport. 

A STUNT competition is composed of two teams competing across a four quarter format in skills such as: pyramids, partners stunts, tosses, tumbling, jumps and a team routine. 

As noted in the NCAA press release, Lauri Harris, the executive director of USA Cheer said this when asked about the adoption of STUNT as an NCAA Championship sport. 

"Stunt was created to give female athletes a legitimate, competitive pathway at the collegiate level โ€” one rooted in strategy, objectivity and opportunity. Advancing to NCAA Championship status validates that vision and the thousands of athletes, coaches, officials and institutions who helped build this sport." - Lauri Harris

Based on the NCAA press release, here is the format that the NCAA STUNT Championship will follow and other important information! 

Stunt Information From The NCAA

Roster Size: 

  • Division 1: 35 student-athletes
  • Division 2: 32 student-athletes
  • Division 3: 20 student athletes

Competition Format

  • Each game will feature two teams going head-to-head in a four quarter format. Teams will compete in partner stunts, tosses and pyramids. They will also compete in a team routine, tumbling and jumps. 
  • The national governing body will send out 12 routines for teams to master over the course of the year. In competition, coaches will call out plays and a team can either accept or pass on the calls. 
  • Team team with the best execution wins the point for the round. 
  • The team with the most points at the end of four quarters wins the game. 

Championship Format 

  • The championship will be conducted through a double-elimination format and games will only require existing gym space.
